RESEARCH:
While
providing services and training, The Mailman Center for Child
Development faculty, staff and students are working on solutions
for a better tomorrow. Research is interwoven into every aspect
at the Center and has produced nationally-recognized results
in many disciplines.
Areas of research
include genetics, relationships between play and development
in premature children, early detection of mental retardation,
the effect of low maternal education level on development,
cochlear implants, the effects of long-term illness on psychosocial
adaptation and development, the effects of HIV infection on
neurodevelopment, and family-based interventions for childhood
health disorders.

SERVICE
PROGRAMS:
The Mailman
Center for Child Development is a very special place for children
and families. Here, experts in their fields provide families
with answers to such questions as:
"Is there something wrong with my child?"
"How can
we cope with the news we just received?"
"Where
do we go to get the help my child needs?"
|

One
in five babies is born with a high risk of having a special
health or developmental need.
|
|
One of the unique
aspects of the Mailman Center is that the professionals work
both within their own discipline and together as an interdisciplinary
team. This interdisciplinary approach helps develop a comprehensive
understanding of the child's strengths and needs.
Children can be
seen by one or more of the following disciplines at the Center:
audiology, clinical psychology, developmental medicine, education,
genetics, and speech and language pathology.
Another unique
aspect is the Center's responsiveness to cultural and linguistic
diversity of our community. Annually, the Center provides
counseling, evaluation, diagnostic and intervention services
to more than 10,000 children and adults.
Areas of emphasis
include: academic achievement, behavior, medical and health
issues, growth and development, speech and language development
and family relationships.

or class.
|
|
he mission of the
Center includes the preparation of professionals in the many
disciplines necessary to provide the array of care and services
needed by individuals with special needs and their families.
Students from across
the country come here to develop specialized skills through
active participation in training courses and clinical internships.
A myriad of exemplary services gives the students a unique
training opportunity to gain the knowledge they will need
to fulfill future leadership roles in their communities.
|
| Graduates
go on to excel in their fields as faculty, policy makers, and
health and education professionals.
Not only does training
take place at the Mailman Center, but faculty and students
are involved in providing continuing education programs throughout
the state. The programs are designed for individuals with
special needs and their families, professionals, paraprofessionals,
and individuals in the community.
These efforts result
in hundreds of lectures, workshops, training sessions, and
special events annually. They also provide the opportunity
to share research findings, new assessment and intervention
techniques and procedures, new teaching curricula, and family-centered
practices.
