Nursing

The primary role of the Mailman Center Nursing Division is to facilitate the training of graduate nursing students and nurse practitioner students for future leadership positions in neurodevelopmental disabilities via the LEND Program. Students from the advanced nursing programs in several area universities participate each semester in the LEND program.

Community education and training activities are carried out under the aegis of the Center on Aging & Disabilities (CAD), the adult "arm" of the UCEDD. The CAD implements a wide variety of educational projects for families and adults with developmental disabilities, as well as for a myriad of disability and other community professionals who interact with them. Topics of recent initiatives include community inclusion and service opportunities, guardianship and trust options for families and professionals, and the prevention of abuse of vulnerable adults. For more details on these projects, visit the CAD web site at:

http://cad.med.miami.edu

Education and advocacy roles are implemented through regular presentations at professional conferences and continuing participation on key local, statewide and national disability-related committees and councils. Some of these affiliations include: APD-10 Family Care Council and Family Care Council Florida, Florida Inclusion Council, Interagency Quality Council, and the Coalition to Prevent Abuse of Vulnerable Adults, among many others. In addition to families and adults with disabilities, a variety of disability professionals, aging services professionals, justice professionals, attorneys and professional guardians have been recipients of the CAD's educational offerings.
