Mailman Center for Child Development

New Art for the ArtAbilities Collection

Many new paintings will join the Mailman Center for Child Development's art collection.

This collection project, called ArtAbilities, was started in 1995 with the idea to put a child's drawing on the front cover of the Center's new brochure. Ten years later, the Mailman Center has a huge collection of quality children's art created by children with disabilities or special health care needs, the very children the Center is dedicated to serving.

Each year the Mailman Center has selected new art works created by children in Miami-Dade County Public Schools' exceptional student education program.

This year was no exception. Many stunning pieces were submitted by teachers from all over Dade County.

This year for the first time ever, a special themed project was created for the Mailman Center and Journey of Dreams in conjuction with Parent to Parent of Miami.

The theme was Angels & Dreams. The children rose to the challenge and submitted some terrific works of art with many interpretations on this theme.

Some of these exceptional submissions were selected for silent auction at the Parent to Parent of Miami's Journey of Dreams fundraiser. Over $65,000 was raised during this fundraiser for use in support of families with children with disabilities and chronic illness.

The remaining selected artwork will hang on display in the permanent collection at the Mailman Center and serve to bring joy to the children, families, and staff who work and visit.

This year, on May 18th, the artists and their families are invited to attend an award ceremony. At this event they will receive a picture of themselves next to their art work, an award medal, and a gift certificate.

Many of the art pieces chosen this year are displayed here on this website. If you do not see your child's art displayed, we may not have received your child's art release form yet. It will be displayed as soon as we receive this form. You may also order a set of notecards with your child's art. Call the number below for details.

If you have any questions about your child's artwork please contact us at 305-243-4466. Completed forms may also be faxed to 305-243-6416.
