Leadership
Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND)
Providing
interdisciplinary leadership education in the field of developmental
disabilities.
|
 |
WHAT
IS THE LEND PROGRAM?
The
LEND Program provides advanced interdisciplinary leadership
training to health professionals who are interested in working
with children with developmental disabilities, chronic illness,
or other special health care needs and their families. In
a milieu that is designed to nurture and challenge potential
leaders, trainees participate in structured didactics (web-based
and classroom); clinical rotations; research; and activities
that promote understanding of systems of care for children
with special health care needs.
|
|
The LEND curriculum
accommodates different training pathways, dependent on the
background, experience, interests and time devoted to the
LEND training program. Each trainee develops an Individualized
Training Plan with his or her supervisor. Priority areas
include: children with chronic illnesses; children and families
from diverse backgrounds; needs of children exposed to abuse,
neglect and poverty; and the use of genetic screening, diagnosis,
and treatment. The LEND program requires a minimum commitment

LEND
SETTING
The
LEND Program is a unique leadership internship opportunity
at the University of Miami, School of Medicine, Department
of Pediatrics, Mailman Center for Child Development. The
Mailman Center, founded in 1970, is one of the oldest
LEND training programs in the nation and is internationally
renown for its work to prevent and treat neurodevelopmental
disabilities. The Center offers an interdisciplinary,
family-centered, culturally competent model of service
delivery in which services are provided for infants, children,
and adolescents with developmental, behavioral, learning,
and neurological disorders. These service settings provide
the venue for clinical training opportunities.
The
LEND Program at the Mailman Center is located in the diverse
community of Miami, Florida. Florida is the nation's fourth
most populated state and has the largest child population
under five years of age. Miami is one of the major centers
for this growth, with an average of 10,000 new students
entering our public school system each year. Approximately
80% of the Miami-Dade County population is composed of
individuals of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
The Center
is a 9-story building with nearly 115,000 square feet
of office, clinical, training, conference, and laboratory
space. It is located in Miami's busy University of Miami/Jackson
Memorial Medical Center. Jackson Memorial Hospital is
the largest part of the medical complex, with an 1800-bed
inpatient facility, 400 of which are pediatric or newborn
at the Holtz Center for Maternal and Child Health. The
Mailman Center annually serves over 15,000 children, youths,
and their families. Well over half of the children served
are from culturally diverse backgrounds. Longtime collaborative
relationships exist with every major community entity
working on behalf of children and youths, facilitating
diverse training opportunities.
